"When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return." If these words do not immediately touch a nerve when you read them, then you are obviously not a pilot. This one sentence captures the passion we all share, an infectious passion that is at times beyond words. For many of us, our passion shares a common history, beginning with a childhood dream of looking up at the sky and wishing we could be there, to the excitement of our first flying lesson, that moment when we first realized our dream was finally becoming our reality.
On the morning of February 5, WingsOverAsia brought together a group of people from around the region to share in this dream, by hosting a special invitation-only fly out to Pulau Tioman for the conclusion of the VIP segment of this year’s Asian Aviators’ Gathering. Accompanying us on this adventure, we were proud to host guests from Japan, Thailand, Taiwan, South Korea, and the Philippines. For the fly out, we took five planes and one helicopter, and each of our guests was paired with a local pilot in an effort to establish new friendships and strengthen the bond between pilots in the Asian aviator community. After briefly meeting at Seletar Airport, we set off on our trip, and luckily the weather was on our side that morning as we were greeted by clear blue skies for the entire flight. While many of us have made the Tioman flight numerous times before, for most of our foreign guests this was their first time, and along the way they were able to take in the awe inspiring views underneath of the dense East Malaysian jungles and the coral reefs set amidst the crystal blue waters of the South China Sea. Once we all arrived in Tioman, we had lunch by the beach and shared stories of flights past and our hopes of the flights yet to come. Although all of our participants come from different places, cultures, and careers, our passion for flying transcends all of those boundaries and allows us a common ground from which to form friendships that will last past any one flight or event. With the shadows of the storm clouds slowly creeping over us, we decided to head back to Singapore and prepare for the festivities that lay ahead of us that night at the Evening by the Bay gathering. |
