In the first week of March, WingsOverAsia achieved a new milestone with its first ever event held outside Singapore and Malaysia.  This time, our wings had spread northwards to Hua Hin, Thailand’s oldest beach resort situated approximately 200 km from the Thai capital, Bangkok.  Hua Hin enjoys a prestigious status amongst the numerous resort towns in Thailand simply because it houses the holiday home of the Thai royal family.  In fact, we found out that when the King is in residence, there are always 3 battleships anchored off the coast of Hua Hin for his royal protection.  And this was exactly the sight that greeted the WOA crew when we traipsed down to the beach on our first day in Hua Hin.

 

在三月的第一个周末,展翅亚洲创下另一个新高峰,第一次在新加坡及马来西亚以外举行飞行员聚会。这一次,我们把翅膀展向华兴,泰国最古老的海边度假胜地。华兴处于泰国首都曼谷200公里之外。在泰国众多海边度假村当中,华兴享有最崇高的地位因为它是泰国皇族度假皇宫的所在处。当地人还向我们透露,每当国王在华兴的时候,海边一定见得到3艘战船,全服武装,准备保护国王。这也就是展翅亚洲队员来到华兴海边所目睹的情景。
 


Aircrafts from Singapore & Thailand at Hua Hin Airport

Day 1 – Arriving in the Beach Paradise

The Getaway began in earnest on Friday morning with the first participants landing in Hua Hin Airport.  A number of private aircraft flew in from Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand while several participants from as far away as Taiwan and Japan came via commercial flights. 

 

We welcomed our first guests – a trio of pilots from Singapore, Taiwan and Switzerland, as they stepped off a domestic flight from Bangkok at around noontime.  The next few hours saw a flurry of private aircraft landings.  Due to the proximity of the airport to the Royal Palace and the accompanying airspace restrictions, our crew remained on the tenterhooks until all our participants had landed safely.  Recurring nightmares of our guest aircraft being escorted in to land by fighter jets due to accidental violation of royal airspace was an unavoidable side effect of organizing this event!  The last domestic flight from Bangkok landed with our 2 Japanese guests who had undoubtedly travelled the furthest to join us at our event.  Despite their long and arduous journey, they seemed unfazed and happily trundled along to their hotel to chill out for the rest of the night.  The last aircraft, a Robinson R22 helicopter, landed just before sunset, having had delays with refuelling at the previous stop.  The seasoned pilot, the good doctor Matthew, and his smiley wife, Sarah, took it in their strides and were soon bundled off by their Thai friends to their house in Hua Hin.

Meanwhile, the rest of the participants had been streaming in through the day overland from Bangkok and beyond.  At 7.30pm, we arranged transport into town for everyone to do a spot of shopping and sample the local delights.  The night market stretched over miles and was absolutely packed with just about everything from street food to sumptuous seafood and souvenirs to jewellery to clothing. There was more than enough to keep everyone occupied until they called it a day several hours later.

 

第一天 - 抵达沙滩天堂
 
这一次聚会的故事在华兴的小机场开始。星期五早上,参加者乘坐的飞机逐一降落在华兴机场。有一些参加者自己架着私人飞机,大老远从新加坡,马来西亚及泰国各地飞到华兴。有些就选择乘搭商业飞机来到华兴。路途最遥远的参加者当然是来自台湾和日本的朋友们。
 
 
在中午首先抵达的是SGA航空公司的班机。我们热烈的欢迎了三位来自新加坡,台湾和瑞士的飞行员。接下来,几架私人飞机连续降落。展翅亚洲队员不禁心惊胆战因为华兴的机场跑道位于皇族度假皇宫附近。在举办这个聚会的当儿,我们都难免有所恐惧,担心会有参加者的私人飞机因为侵犯御用领空而被战斗机护送进华兴机场!最后一班SGA航空公司的班机在傍晚 6.30pm 降落。 两位日本飞行员虽然长途跋涉从日本来到华兴,却毫无怨言,开开心心的前往酒店好好休息。最后一驾抵达的私人飞机是一架 Robinson R22 直升机。 这架直升机在日落时分才降落。飞行员是因为沿途遇上添加燃料的问题所以才这么迟飞到。Matthew 医生与他开朗的太太 Sarah 同样的不把这一些耽搁当作是一回事。他们在降落不久之后就和他们的泰国朋友回家了。
 
 
当我们在机场的同时,其他参加者也陆续由陆地交通从曼谷甚至更远的地方来到华兴。在7.30pm的时候,我们安排了小型巴士送参加者到华兴镇上吃晚餐及逛街。夜市场跨越好几条小路而且应有尽有。大家可以在同一条街上买到当地小吃,新鲜烧烤的海鲜,纪念品以及各式各样的装饰品与服饰。这夜市场足以让大家逛上好几个钟头。

 



Day 2 – Pilots of Asia United

Saturday morning dawned upon us as a fabulous blue skies day.  While many of the participants’ wives, girlfriends and mothers had gone shopping, for massages or just lazing on the beach, they themselves had diligently forgone all that to join us at our seminar.  We kicked off the day with a round of introductions which ended up taking far longer than we expected.  However, everyone’s attention was fully engaged as the roomful of pilots of varying ages, experiences, nationalities and backgrounds went about introducing themselves.  The youngest was a student pilot in her late 20s and the oldest was a veteran GA pilot in his 80s.  Indeed, this (still) humorous old pilot started flying in 1963, way before our young student pilot had even materialised into solid form!  Represented in this room were at least 9 different nationalities who had by planning or by chance landed in this corner of Asia to participate in our humble gathering of aviation enthusiasts.

 

 

 

With the colourful round of introductions completed, we commenced on the first seminar topic proper – Glass Cockpits.  Together we marvelled at the progression from the traditional “6-pack” of basic flight instruments in conventional cockpits to the awesome digital displays in modern glass cockpits.  With a Garmin G1000 simulator and a Boeing 747 glass cockpit simulator, the presenter was able to show participants exactly how flight parameters played out at each stage of flight right through to landing.  Simple pop quizzes throughout the discussion ensured sustained participant involvement.  When they guessed correctly what various indications on the glass cockpit displays meant, they were rewarded with prizes such as caps and bags.  This was a tactic guaranteed to keep them coming back for more!

Following the stimulating glass cockpit discussion, there was a group discussion on Cross Border Flying in Asia.  The objective was to pool the collective knowledge of general aviators in the group with regards to flying in Asia. Little encouragement was needed for all to start spilling out their grievances and comments on airports in various parts in Asia, from the hugely expensive Changi Airport in Singapore to remote small town airports in Thailand where language barriers and bureaucracy often conspire to drive pilots crazy.

Lunch of course consisted of delicious spicy Thai food served in an al fresco restaurant overlooking the sea.  After lunch, in a bid to awaken everyone from their post-meal lethargy, we started off with a paper plane building game with a difference – instead of folding paper planes, we asked our participants to fold paper helicopters.  Everyone was given masking tape, paper clips and paper printed with markings that once cut properly could be folded into a simple helicopter rotor.  The objective was to create a heli that would hover the longest when dropped from the ceiling.  This exercise obviously brought out the boy in every man present.  Passer-bys would surely have been quite amazed to see a roomful of pilots with probably more than a hundred years’ of flying experience between them excitedly folding paper helicopters.  In fact, some were standing on chairs, testing out their paper creations eagerly with gleeful expressions plastered on their faces!  Eventually we had a winning team whose creation surely must have been the culmination of engineering expertise and pure pilot instincts?  The ecstatic winning team walked away with WingsOverAsia t-shirts and caps.

 

 

第二天 - 亚洲飞行员大团聚
 
星期六早上,当大家睡醒的时候, 只见蓝天白云。 许多参加者的家属大清早都已出外逛街,享受泰式按摩或去海边游泳玩乐。我们的参加者却很有决心的舍弃了这一切来参与飞行研讨会。节目开始的时候,全部的参加者先作了自我介绍。由于参加者当中有不同年龄,国籍,经验与背景的飞行员,这段自我介绍花了不少时间。然而,每个人的自我介绍都是那么的精彩,大家也都听得津津有味。其中最年轻的参加者是一名二十多岁的学生飞行员而最年长的是一位八十多岁的飞行员。当这位经验丰富的飞行员初次在1963年开始学习飞行的时候,我们的年轻学生飞行员都还未成形!9个国家的飞行员就这样,在阴差阳错的情况下,聚集在亚洲的这一个角落,一同来探索飞行的奥妙。
 
 
自我介绍结束后,我们进入第一个讨论项目 - 玻璃坐舱。 我们一同感叹飞行科技如此的日新月异。 在数十年内,传统的飞行仪器仅已转变成令人叹为观止的数字电子仪器。讲师利用 Garmin G1000 模拟器和 Boeing747模拟器向大家示范飞机在飞行的时候,各项飞行指数如何的演变。讲师在讨论会的同时,也发出许多问题让参加者们强答。答对的朋友们还获得丰富的奖品例如帽子和旅行袋子。这些奖品肯定有助于鼓励参加者们积极抢答。
 
 
在玻璃坐舱讨论之后,我们进入第二个话题 - 亚洲越野飞行。这个讨论的目的是汇集众飞行员的知识与意见。许多朋友都纷纷把他们的怨言诉说出来。基本上,亚洲各地都有他们独特的问题。其中包括了新加坡章宜国际机场昂贵的收费及泰国许多小机场难应付的官员和言语沟通的问题。
 
午餐当然是美味可口的泰式佳肴。我们坐在沙滩旁边的露天餐馆,一边用餐,一边吹着海风,真是一种享受。午餐后的第一项节目是折纸飞机比赛。与众不同的是,我们要求参加者折纸的直升机,而不是普通飞机。整个游戏目的是用纸,胶纸和回形针建造出简单的直升机水平旋翼。谁的直升机水平旋翼可以在空中盘旋最久就会获得胜利。每个人的心中都有个孩子。此时此刻,这一班飞行员心中的孩子都一一展现在眼前。
游戏一开始,大家就满腔热情的投入当中。有些飞行员还站到椅子上,脸上带着愉快的表情,忙着测他们的创作。若这时候有人经过会议室而目睹飞行员们兴奋的在折纸飞机的模样,他们一定会觉得很好笑!经过参加者们的一番苦思与实验后,冠军终于诞生了。胜利队伍获得了展翅亚洲的t-shirt和帽子。

 

 



Having woken up the group, we continued with a discussion on diesel engines in GA.  Our presenter highlighted the key differences between diesel/jet-fuel engine vs gasoline engine technologies.  There were overviews of the Thielert Centurion C2.0 engine, Austro Engines AE300, SMA SR305-230 Diesel engine and the Wilksch Diesel 2-stroke engine.  This turned out to be a lively discussion especially amongst owners, pilots and engineers who were Asian pioneers who had owned, flown and serviced these controversial diesel/jet-fuel engine planes.

With this last discussion, we concluded our seminar.  Many of the participants were soon off to the beach where an array of water sports such as jet skiing, kite boarding and windsurfing awaited them.  There were also masseuses at the beach and the hotel spa as well as numerous massage parlours all across town providing the best of traditional Thai massage aimed to relax all tired muscles.

 

折纸飞机比赛完毕以后,大家都精神百倍。这时,我们刚好进入节目的最后一个项目 - 柴油引擎与通用航空。 讲师向大家讲解了柴油引擎与汽油引擎科技的主要不同之处。他也呈现了Thielert Centurion引擎,Austro Engines AE300引擎,SMA SR305-230引擎 和Wilksch Diesel 2-stroke引的概要。 由于在场有好几位飞行员及机械师都曾经飞过或维修过柴油引擎的飞机,所以整个讨论会是相当精彩。
 
 
这个题目讨论完毕后,这一天的讨论会也告了一个段落。许多参加者都把握时机,连忙赶到海边去玩一些水上运动例如水上摩托艇,风筝冲浪及风浪板。不想参与激烈运动的朋友 就选择去海边或镇上找按摩师帮他们作个传统泰式按摩,让全身的肌肉松懈下来。

 

 


Dinner was held at Letsea, a rustic resort with an elegant touch.  Throughout dinner, a series of videos were played featuring WingsOverAsia activities in the last few years, activities of Alpha Aviation in Japan and the famous Van Guys airport story in US.  There was also a lucky draw in which the first prize of a Sennheiser headset was won by our dainty lady aerobatic pilot from Japan.  Most importantly, throughout the night, conversation and laughter flowed easily amongst the pilots and their family members.  There were several pilots’ wives who were deep in conversation, no doubt exchanging their opinions on the madness for flying which had so afflicted their husbands!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


The party continued to the rooftop of a nearby condominium owned by our Thai WOA co-ordinators.  Armed with plenty of beer, wine, vodka and chips, we settled down on deckchairs at the poolside to chat and seal the friendships made during this short few days.  Enjoying the sea breeze under the dark starry skies, it didn’t seem like life could get any better than this …

 

晚餐是在Letsea进行。Letsea是个质朴又典雅的地方。除了有当地美食让大家享用,我们也播放了一些简单而有趣的录像片给大家观赏。这些录像片题目包括展翅亚洲近几年的一些活动,日本 Alpha Aviation 的成就史以及非常出名的 Van Guys 机场故事。当晚幸运大抽奖的头奖是一部 Sennheiser 耳机。 赢取头奖的幸运儿竟然是来自日本的秀丽优雅女特技飞行员。整个晚上,飞行员与他们的家属都有说有笑。许多飞行员的太太们更是谈得非常投入。或许她们是在谈论丈夫为什么会如此沉迷与飞行吧!
 
 
晚餐结束以后,我们把聚会转移到附近公寓的天台上。这个地方是展翅亚洲泰国工作者的私人住所而他们是很慷慨的让大家借用。我们准备了不少啤酒,葡萄酒, Vodka 和马铃薯片招待来到天台游泳池边的朋友。 坐在舒服的躺椅上,喝着美酒,吹着海风,欣赏着华兴的夜景,和朋友们聊天 。。。真是人生一大享受!

Day 3 – Time to fly home

All good things must come to an end.  Early Sunday morning, the first of the private aircraft took off from Hua Hin Airport to make their way home.  (I swear the pilots were not amongst the ones drinking with us at the rooftop the night before!)  The rest of the folks catching commercial flights out of Bangkok were packed into vans for the land transfer back to town.

As people boarded their planes to return home to various parts of Asia, we do hope that we had achieved our aims for this gathering in the beautiful city Hua Hin.  The aims were really not to impart profound technical knowledge but more to promote friendship and bonding between GA pilots across Asia.  Friendships made will definitely flourish as GA pilots continue to traverse Asia to seek new flying adventures with new friends made during this WingsOverAsia’s Hua Hin Getaway …

 

第三天 - 回家了!
 
天下无不散之宴席。星期天一大清早,多数的私人飞机都已离开华兴机场,往回家的方向飞去了。(我肯定这些飞行员前天晚上并没有与我们一同在天台上喝酒!) 其他人也顺序乘搭小型巴士回到曼谷,转搭国际班机回国。
 
当大家逐一离开的时候,我们回首一望,诚心希望这次聚会有达到的目的。我们的目的并不是传达飞行知识与技术细节而是促进亚洲飞行员之间的友谊。这一点,我们相信我们的确做到了。我们也深信在华兴结成的友谊将会在未来的日子里继续萌芽成长。
